Final Thoughts

This trip was a trip of a lifetime. I planned for years and it was so wonderful to finally be there. It was a dream come true.
We went thinking that this may be the only time we ever went to Disney World. But now we want to go again and again and again!! We will definitely be going back.
What were our favorite moments as a family?
Let's start with the youngest.

Maddy- Maddy didn't get it all. She is very young still. I had a lot of people say that they would never take such a young child but I am so glad we did. She had a great time. She was interested in everything that was going on around us. She loved playing whenever there was a playground or play area. She was afraid of the characters but still liked watching them. The fact that there was music playing pretty much everywhere was a miracle to her. She loved it.
I can't ask her what her favorite things were, but I can say what she enjoyed and my favorite Maddy moments.
Beauty and the Beast Live Stage Show at Hollywood Studios- It was such a highlight of the trip to watch her watch the show and dance. She loved it!
The Little Mermaid show at Hollywood Studios- Again, it was so fun to watch her reaction to this.
Playhouse Disney at Hollywood Studios- I loved watching her dance and trying to escape to the stage.
It's a Small World- the second time we went on when she was actually awake.
Mickey Mouse Rice Krispie treat- She didn't have one until we were leaving but she loved that thing!

Abi- Every time you ask Abi what her favorite ride was, it is something different. So, I will name all the ones that have come up...
The Peter Pan ride- I think she noticed something new every time we rode this.
The Carousel- especially the time when she rode Cinderella's horse!
Winnie the Pooh- she really liked the line and play area too.
The tea cups- she loved being in control of the tea cup!
Dumbo! This one is the answer most often. She really loved this ride.
The Barnstormer roller coaster in Toon Town- We rode this so many times in a row it was crazy!
Playhouse Disney- it's funny how she knew those were puppets!
Toy Story Mania- she was always so upset with her score though.
Riding the monorail- I wish she could have ridden up front with the driver but they said they didn't allow that anymore after an accident last summer. Hopefully, they will again someday.
Soarin'- She was beaming after this ride.
Spaceship Earth- Her favorite ride by far at Epcot.
Meeting the characters.. especially the princesses and fairies. She was the most excited about having met Aurora!
Her birthday- everything about it!
Swimming in the pool at the resort.
Playing on the beach at the Polynesian.
Her favorite treats- Mickey Mouse Ice Cream bars and the Butter Beer we had at Harry Potter World.

Doug-
His favorite parks were The Magic Kingdom and Epcot.
He loved that the trip was very relaxing and fun. That surprised me because I wasn't sure he would find it relaxing since it was the first time he has ever been on a real vacation with me and had to live the 'park commando' lifestyle.
He loved eating out and going to so many great restaurants. His favorite was the character breakfast at Akurshus Castle in Epcot.
He loved riding all the rides. He thinks his favorites were Soarin' and Spaceship Earth at Epcot.
He just loved the atmosphere and feeling everywhere we went.
His favorite treat was the Mickey Mouse Ice Cream Bars.

Me-
I loved everything about this trip.
It was so great to be able to not only live a dream I have had for so long but to be able to also see it for the first time through the eyes of my children and the eyes of my parents.
The highlights of the trip for me were:
Watching Abi come out of her shell to trade pins and meet characters. This had a life altering effect on her. Really, it did. She came back from this trip a changed little girl. I have received so many comments from people about how much more outgoing and confident she is in public. I love that.
The dinner we had at Narcooses at the Grand Floridian. It was so classy and it felt so special.
Surprising the girls with the trip and then also surprising them with Grandma and Grandpa being there!
Our meals at Akurshus, The Crystal Palace, The Liberty Tree Tavern, Coral Reef, 1900 Park Fare, and the Castle.
Soarin'- that ride is so much fun.
Walking down Main street in the Magic Kingdom for the first time. That first glimpse of the castle.
Our day spent in Fantasyland.
The Haunted Mansion- always will be the best Haunted House.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
Our anniversary date back to the park by ourselves.
Seeing Harry Potter with my mom at the theater in Downtown Disney.
The shows at Hollywood Studios.
Seeing the cute little baby elephant on the safari at Animal Kingdom
Watching the electrical pageant at the Polynesian resort.
Going to Harry Potter World- especially eating at the 3 Broomsticks, buying a wand, and the best ride ever.
Watching Abi get asked to dance by Prince Charming and say no (boo hoo... that would have been so cool!) but then dancing with Anastasia.

Just being there!
My favorite treat was probably Abi's birthday cake.

Good Mickey Mail!

Just when I was starting to wonder if we would ever get the Mickey Mouse ears that Maddy was supposed to get for her haircut, a big envelope came in the mail. I was so excited when I saw that it was from Walt Disney World!

We quickly opened it up and found her ears and a signed Mickey Mouse picture.

Of course we had to try on the ears right away... Maddy wasn't sure what to think.

Our last moments at Disney

Tuesday afternoon we got back to the hotel from Harry Potter world and spent some time just hanging out with my parents watching them pack and get ready for an early departure tomorrow.

We had dinner in the food court for the last time, spent some time in the gift shop, and then went to bed early around 8:30.

We met my parents early the next morning to have breakfast in the food court to use our last quick service credits.

My parents had their flight to catch and were using Magic Express again ( I don't think I talked about that before... if you stay onsite the Magic Express buses come to the airport to pick you up and even get your luggage for you from the baggage claim so all you have to do is check in at the magic express area. They deliver it to your room for you a few hours after your arrival. Then on your way home they take your luggage from you and check it in for you as well so you don't have to worry about it. This is all free.)

I like to pack the car when we have so much stuff so Doug stayed with the girls while I packed up and took load after load out to the car. It took forever.

As soon as I was finished Abi and I left Doug and Maddy to go use the rest of our snack credits. We had about 12 left on our card that we didn't want to waste so we went into the food court and stocked up on milk for Maddy, rice kispie Mickey Mouse heads, and a snack for the road.

Abi had brought along her big glowing balloon because we didn't want to bring it home. She was pretty sad when we told her we weren't going to be taking it and , in retrospect, we probably could have made it work but this was a big balloon.

She had decided to give it to another little girl. She found one and gave it to her but the mom made her give it back. So, when we were in the food court she found two women with two little girls and asked them if she could give their girls the balloon. They had just arrived and were thrilled. It was really nice to watch Abi do something like that and see how it made the other children feel. We had a really nice conversation afterward about how doing things for others makes you feel good too.

Then we filled up our soda mugs and traded her last pin with a lady at the front desk for a Minnie 'nerd' pin.

It was time to go.

We were happy to be going home but it really was so sad to drive under that big sign on the way out.

Each girl got their snack: Maddy had a rice krispie treat....

Abi had some Chip and Dale pretzels...

We rarely stopped on the ride. We were trying to make up time spent at the hotel by getting to Atlanta as fast as we could so we could spend some more time with my cousin Lora.

The girls were great and played nicely, napped, and snacked.

We stopped at a Steak and Shake for lunch because one of Doug's friends had told him that it was the greatest place in the world. We kept seeing them so we thought we would try it out....

We were not impressed. It was pretty funny.

The day took a turn for the crazy as we approached Atlanta. We were pretty close to Lora's house and we kept seeing signs warning of ice. Then we began to see wrecks and cars off the road everywhere. We had slowed way down and then hit the traffic which was basically bumper to bumper... everyone going slow to avoid dying and avoiding the accidents that were all over the place. It took us over 3 hours to go the last 20 miles to her house.

We were texting back and forth so she could keep track of where we were and make sure we were still safe.

I have never seen so many accidents and cars off the road in my life.

Finally we got to a point when the traffic let up and we arrived at our exit. There weren't many cars on the smaller road to her house but there were cars pulled off everywhere. In one spot I counted 11 cars. It was really scary and crazy.

We finally go to their house around ten. The girls were asleep but woke up going into the house so we let them play for a little while and we talked to Lora and Jeff. Finally we got the girls to bed.

Doug woke me up at 6am saying that it was much warmer outside and he felt safe leaving so I got up to get everyone ready. We left by about 6:45am.

We accidentally left Maddy's Hello Kitty doll there but Lora was wonderful and mailed it to us a week later. Thanks Lora!

We got McDonalds for breakfast and ate in the car. This would be our pattern for the day. We only left the car for the occasional bathroom stop. We wanted to get past this crazy weather and get home!

As we drove through Tennessee we saw the waterfalls were gone. This is how they looked this time...

We also saw a semi truck that had completely taken out the side of the road barrier keeping you from going over the cliff. It looked like he had driven up on it and rode it for a few hundred yards. It was a crazy accident.

We ate lunch in the car as well and kept the girls occupied on this long drive with music, their toys, and playing games on Doug's phone...

Abi got her last prize in Indiana- mermaid stickers. She was asleep for Illinois and Wisconsin so I saved those for another time!

It was cold along the way but the weather stayed good for the rest of the trip and then started snowing harder when we got home.

It was so great to be home and the girls had fun playing for a little while before bed.

Disney World Day 14: Leaving the world for the day

Today was a much anticipated day. We were going to leave Disney World to go to Universal's Islands of Adventure to visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

My dad really isn't a Harry Potter fan so he opted to stay back at the room.

We drove to Islands of Adventure. It took about ten or fifteen minutes. When we got there we decided to do valet parking which is unusual for us but we are so glad we did. It really wasn't that much and we still had a little bit of a walk so it would have been much worse if we had parked in a parking lot.

Normally the walk wouldn't matter but it was freezing today. It was one of those days where you just can't seem to get warm. I felt like we were back in the midwest rather than Florida.

But, even in the cold weather, we were so excited to be there.

We arrived about twenty minutes before opening and got in line.

Pretty soon the gates were opened and we were on our way to the back of the park to get to Harry Potter's world as fast as we could.

Our first glimpse of Hogsmeade...

The minute you walked through the gate into Hogsmeade you are transported into the books/ movies. It was amazing. They did a beautiful job of re creating this.

I felt a little giddy inside.

As much as we wanted to stop and look at everything I knew we should get back to the castle first to try and beat the crowds.

It was so good we did. The castle is home to the ride The Forbidden Journey. Abi wasn't tall enough to ride so my mom stayed with the girls while Doug and I went on. The sign said five minutes wait and that was about right.

As you walk up to the castle and begin going through the very long line area (I cannot imagine waiting for this ride if the entire thing was full) it is so surreal. You really feel like you are at Hogwarts.

You go through an area with lockers and things and then go back out and through the greenhouse.

As you enter the castle you begin to see all the really cool stuff. We were walking through the line area so fast I didn't want to stop but I had to a few times to get some pictures along the way.

Looks like Gryffindor is ahead....

Got any memories to deposit?

On the balcony in the next picture you can kind of make out Dumbledore. There was a projection of him up there talking to us as we walked through his office. It looked so real.

Walking past the Fat Lady's door... it was too bad that the pictures on the walls and this didn't turn out in my pictures but they really did have the moving people in them.

Toward the end of the line area we saw the Sorting Hat. It did talk too.

Soon Doug and I were on the ride. You sit four people to a thing and these huge harnesses come down over you. Then you are lifted off and whisked away. You travel through the castle and every once in a while come to rest in a little nook that has a screen around you like Soarin'. It is so hard to explain but at the first one you feel like you are flying out the castle window with Harry on a broom. It really feels like it!

Then it kind of pulls back and you go through the castle again while this dragon is tearing up the ceiling trying to get to you. The dragon breaks through and roars (so loud) at you.

Basically you go back and forth between flying around inside the castle and being at the screens with the virtual movement. There were spiders that spit (the first time I got that right in the eye!) and the whomping willow (you almost go upside down in your chair to avoid those flying branches).

It was AMAZING!

As soon as the ride stopped I looked at Doug and said, "Best Ride Ever."

We ran through the crowded gift shop and found my mom outside. Doug switched with her to stay with the girls and my mom and I ran back to the line. It was still only 5 minutes although it did take a little longer than before.

My mom loved it too and I was so glad I got to ride it again.

It is seriously the coolest ride I've ever been on.

When we had all ridden the ride, we skipped the other two rides in favor of getting to the wand shop. We ended up waiting in line for about twenty minutes to get in. By the time we got in we were at the front of the line so I was pretty excited but then when they took us in we accidently all went to the back of the room and then realized the show was on the other side so we could barely see it. Still fun though.

We grabbed some wands and then decided we should go to lunch right away before it got too crazy.

For lunch we were headed to The Three Broomsticks!

It was kind of weird paying for our meal! The 3 Broomsticks was very cool. It looked old and run down and very much how I pictured it.

I got the chicken with fries and corn. It looks kind of gross but it was really good.

Doug got fish and chips. He said it was real good as well.

I believe my mom got the fish and chips too. Abi got chicken fingers and fries with grapes.

And of course we all got BUTTERBEER!

It was so good and Abi says it was her favorite treat of the entire trip. It is hard to explain what it tastes like but it has kind of a vanilla/cream soda feel to it (although I don't like vanilla or cream soda)with some whipped cream and butterscotch flavor in the mix. It was really good.

The 3 Broomsticks is connected with the Hogs Head so we got a good look at that too.

It was ridiculouslly crowded by this point so we decided to forgo the rides we had missed and just stick to the shops.

Most of the buildings are false shops. There were only a few true shops in them.

Zonkos ... you can check out the shop crowds here. This wasn't a line, this was just people packed in trying to get around. Now imagine me trying to get through that with a huge double stroller. Not fun.

We were looking for Gryffindor scarves and finally went back up to the gift shop at Hogwarts. We were able to find them there but I was almost stuck there for life. They were in a corner. I got in there and grabbed two- one for my mom and one for me. Then when I turned around I was completely surrounded by people just reaching over my shoulder and head to get to the things behind me. For a moment I thought, "This is how people get trampled." It was crazy. Finally I pushed my way out. Unfortunately saying "Excuse me" did no good so I had to force a way. I tried to look around the store a little more but my sanity was really suffering so I grabbed another thing I knew I wanted and then searched for the Marauders Map. I really wanted one but at an asking price of $50 there was no way. I stuck with what I already had and we checked out.

On our way back down through the village we caught a little bit of the Durmstrang boys and Beauxbatons girls putting on a show.

It was too crowded to do anything now and we were so cold that we decided it would be best to go do the one last area we had planned on doing in this park and head home.

We said goodbye to Harry's world with one last look.

We made our way to the front of the park stopping only at Suess Landing.

It was decorated very cute.

Abi and I left my mom and Doug with Maddy and went up to ride The High In The Sky Suess Trolley. This was the longest line. It took us at least a half an hour to get on this thing and we were freezing. You can see in the picture below that Abi had on her regular clothes, covered by a blue hoodie, a brown hoodie, and her winter coat. She also had gloves on. She was still cold.

This was pretty fun. We just rode along a little track up high through a few buildings and around the park area. I liked this view of the castle...

After the trolley, Abi rode the Caro-Suessal with Doug...

Then we all rode the Cat in the Hat ride. This is the jerkiest ride ever. It was spinning all over the place and I was getting seriously dizzy. We had to hold on to Maddy really tight.

We were going to try to see the Grinch show but I heard it was outdoor and it was just too cold for that.

We rode one more ride: One fish, Two fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.

Then we left the park.

On our way out Abi had to stop and get pictures on all the fun little props...

So, what were our thoughts?

Well, The Wizarding World was amazing.

The thing we all agreed on afterward is that the Universal parks have a totally different feel to them. Islands of Adventure doesn't feel like a 'family' park at all. I think it would be a fun place to go as a teenager with all your buddies but not as cool with little ones.

The tickets were expensive and their merchandise and food are way more expensive than at Disney.

If it weren't for Harry Potter world I am pretty sure I wouldn't bother going there ever again. But that ride was so cool I kind of want to go ride it again!

I think it is best to go before Disney parks so you aren't in that Disney spirit. This is a weird analogy for theme parks but it kind of felt like when you go to seminary and then back into the school building going from Disney to Universal.

I also hope that if we ever go again the crowds will have died down a little. If we hadn't got there right at opening we wouldn't have been able to do the things we did. We probably would have spent the entire day in line at the castle and wand shop.

It was a great experience though and I am so glad we went.
